Explore a route model preview

This small preview uses genuine NOAA GFS wind and height fields with BELT's experimental Ellrod calculation. It is a model-derived signal, not measured or real-time turbulence, an airline flight forecast, or an official NOAA turbulence product.

Two reference routes are available. Every point uses the same model-valid hour and cruise level. This does not account for an actual flight's departure time, filed route, climb, descent, altitude changes or all sources of turbulence.

What this preview means

The wind-shear and deformation calculation produces an experimental EDR-equivalent index. Higher bars indicate a larger model signal; low values do not establish a smooth or safe flight. The conversion has limited calibration and cannot resolve every local or short-lived condition.

The nominal assumption is 35,000 feet pressure altitude. The model samples the nearest supported level, 250 hPa, with 200 and 300 hPa vertical brackets. GFS grid spacing is 0.25 degrees; nine points follow a great-circle reference between airport coordinates.

Freshness and coverage

This is a manually prepared snapshot, with no automatic refresh. Values disappear after the stated expiry. Missing, invalid, future-dated retrieval clocks and expired data are shown as unavailable. Route guides remain separate geographical reference pages.
